I posed this question yesterday on Facebook: “If all of your freedoms where taken away but you were allowed to keep just one what would it be?”

If you are a theist then please don’t say your right to worship God because no one can take that right away from you.  You might get killed for doing so but then I believe you would be standing before God still worshiping.  You don’t get to keep your Bible either.

Think about it.  Other than those two things what or who is most important to you?

  1. I would say that none of the trappings of Christianity are required to worship God. King David did it naked.

My answer is: My freedom to fight for my freedoms.

Good answer Mike but that also kind of sounds like asking the genie for infinite wishes ;)

  2. That’s too difficult (and why I didn’t comment on the facebook post). I mean, every freedom I really enjoy that much I’d fight for it. So in that sense, it really couldn’t be taken away from me. Like someone said on the facebook comment, I can’t even think of the freedom’s I most appreciate.

    Thought provoking question though. Thanks.

What about you? Do you have an answer?

I do have a follow up question to your response: How far should one be willing to go to fight for their freedoms. And of course I would like to hear your response from a follower of Jesus perspective.

To answer your question I would have to say I would want the freedom to remain married to my wife.

      • Wow, yeah, that’s a big question. On one hand, I believe some things are crucially important. But on the other, I think (as followers of Jesus) we’re called to submit to the authority placed over us. We don’t have any “rights” anyway. Everything’s a gift from God.

For me, I think it would come down to the individual situation, what exactly is being taken away and what exactly God is telling me to do. In some situations I would easily want to fight for my freedoms from a selfish perspective, but in other situations I would easily want to avoid fighting for my freedoms from a selfish perspective.

As if my comment isn’t already leaning in this direction, I’ve come to realize more and more how much God wants me to lay down my freedoms and rights for His glory. Right now for me, that’s more difficult than fighting for them.

Great topic for discussion though. It’s a question I know many before us have wrestled with.

    a) My first thought was to ask for the freedom to read books, since I do that all the time, then I thought as that’s a solitary (for the most part activity) and I love being around people, that I should ask for the right to have parties and allow anyone who wanted to come.

    b) love the snow falling all over your site btw

Except for my wife being around me I would love the solitude. Parties would drive me crazy after awhile but I would go over to yours for a half hour or so. :)

I got the snow idea when I was on blogging on wordpress.com. They introduced it last year and said it was a plugin for wordpress.org. Now I am on wordpress.org and thought I would use it. Glad you like it.
